About Wingate Elementary Inclusive Playground

Our Mission

To create a place where every child, regardless of ability, can play, connect, and belong. We believe every child deserves the opportunity to experience the joy of play, build friendships, and create lasting memories alongside their peers.

Our Vision

At Wingate Elementary, we believe that play is for everyone. Our vision is to create an inclusive playground where children of all abilities can explore, take risks, build confidence, and experience the joy of playing together. Through accessible equipment, opportunities for sensory exploration, and spaces that encourage connection and independence, we hope to create an environment where every child feels welcomed, valued, and included.

But our vision extends beyond the playground itself. We envision a place where friendships grow, barriers are broken down, differences are celebrated, and children learn that everyone has something unique to contribute. A place where children can challenge themselves, discover new possibilities, and experience a true sense of belonging.

This playground is more than a collection of equipment; it is a reflection of the heart of our Wingate community and a gathering place for the greater Redlands community. Since it also serves as a public city park, it will welcome families, neighbors, and visitors of all ages and abilities to come together, play, connect, and create lasting memories. Made possible by the generosity, compassion, and dedication of families, local businesses, and community members, it represents our shared belief that everyone deserves a place to belong.

Together, we are building more than a playground. We are creating a place where barriers are broken, connections are made, every child can play, and everyone belongs.

Stories of Impact

Our daughter Madilynn is 9 years old and lives with an extremely rare genetic condition called Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 5 (SCA5), which affects her balance, coordination, strength, and mobility. She has worked incredibly hard to learn skills many kids take for granted, including walking independently. Yet at her own school playground, she often can’t access the equipment or play alongside her friends without significant help. She is left watching from the sidelines when all she wants is the chance to simply be a kid.

We have seen firsthand the difference an inclusive playground can make. When a space is designed with kids like Madilynn in mind, she can explore independently, play alongside her brother and friends, and experience the joy and freedom every child deserves. Madilynn will eventually age out of Wingate, but the playground we build today can impact thousands of children and families for generations. We are asking our community to invest in more than a playground – we are investing in belonging, independence, friendship, and a place where every child can play.

Our son, Ethan, was born with a rare genetic disorder that causes seizures and other complex medical challenges. While Ethan loves going to the park, traditional playground equipment presents significant safety risks for him. An inclusive playground would change that entirely. It would provide Ethan with safe opportunities to play alongside his classmates and peers, allowing our family to enjoy the park together without the constant fear of injury. This project will not only benefit children with disabilities, but it will also deeply impact our entire community by serving as a beautiful, living example of why true inclusivity matters.
