About West City Inclusive Park

Just off one of the Midwest’s most vital freight corridors and nestled along the southern edge of Rend Lake, the Village of West City is a small community with a strong connection to growth, commerce, and regional activity. Closely integrated with the neighboring City of Benton, West City serves as a hub for residents, visitors, and businesses throughout the area as they go about their daily activities. Recognizing the importance of creating spaces that are accessible and welcoming to people of all abilities, the West City Board of Trustees has approved plans to incorporate an inclusive playground as part of the new Community Center development.

Inclusive playgrounds provide tremendous value to communities, offering opportunities for children and families of all abilities to play, learn, and connect together. They often become destinations in their own right, attracting visitors and generating increased activity that benefits local businesses and the surrounding community. Combined with the other planned improvements to the West City community, the inclusive playground will help transform the site into a vibrant gathering place and a lasting community asset.

The Village of West City is committed to creating a playground where every child—regardless of ability, background, or circumstance—has the opportunity to belong, thrive, and play without barriers. The playground will feature sensory-rich experiences, tactile exploration, and opportunities for meaningful social interaction, allowing children of all abilities to engage, learn, and connect with one another. Equally important, the design will encourage participation from parents, grandparents, family members, and friends who may face mobility or accessibility challenges that often limit engagement in traditional playground settings.

We envision a welcoming community destination where children of all abilities can play, explore, and grow together. Through thoughtful planning, innovative play features, sensory-rich experiences, and a steadfast commitment to universal accessibility, West City’s inclusive playground will create opportunities for children to build friendships, develop confidence, and engage with one another in meaningful ways. More than just a playground, this project reflects West City’s commitment to fostering a stronger, more inclusive community—one where barriers are removed, differences are celebrated, families gather, and every child and family member feels welcome, valued, and connected.
